Month-End Readiness Guide

Use this guide to create a more dependable monthly close and reporting routine.

Reconcile

  • Bank, credit-card, loan, payroll, merchant, and clearing accounts reconciled
  • Accounts receivable and accounts payable subledgers tied to the general ledger
  • Inventory counts and fixed-asset activity reviewed
  • Unusual, duplicate, stale, or uncategorized items investigated

Review

  • Revenue, gross profit, payroll, and major expense trends compared with expectations
  • Balance-sheet accounts supported by schedules
  • Accruals, prepaids, depreciation, and correcting entries recorded
  • Cash position and near-term obligations reviewed

Report and act

  • Income statement, balance sheet, and cash-flow information issued
  • Material variances and KPIs explained in plain language
  • Open questions assigned to an owner and due date
  • Next-month cash, collection, cost, and operational priorities documented
Next step: Mark each item honestly. Items that are missing, late, unclear, or owned by no one are the first issues to address.

For general educational use. This checklist does not replace accounting, tax, legal, or investment advice specific to your organization.

Are the numbers creating more questions than answers?

Late reports, tight cash despite profit, overdue invoices, unreconciled accounts, or unexplained expenses are not small bookkeeping annoyances. They can delay decisions and quietly reduce profit.
